Hardware Requirements for Server Installation

The hardware requirements for the dedicated server running Prognosis is not a one-size-fits-all, there are many factors that contribute to the requirements, including:

  • How many vendors or switches are being monitored?
  • How many systems and devices are being monitored?
  • How many Users or Transactions are processed daily?
  • How much data is required to be kept and for how long?
  • Is this a Management Server (Global/Regional/Other) or a Monitoring Server?

All these factors contribute to the hardware needed for each specific server, the data provided below gives typical recommendations for small to medium-sized environments with only a few monitored systems and up to 100,000 Users (unless otherwise stated). Typical Usage

For all Prognosis Servers and Windows Client installs, the average CPU usage should be less than 50% and peak CPU usage less than 60%. Using this as a guide, when the performance of the server exceeds these limits consider increasing the number of CPU's or memory to achieve this goal.

Virtualization Support

When a virtualized platform is deployed to run the Prognosis Server, some machine platform metrics, such as Windows CPU busy, from the virtual environment may not be reliable.

Installation Hard Drive Space:

The installation requires the following minimum hard drive space.

- Server component.......................2.5 GB (single or combined Management/Monitoring)


Plus, when installed with the server:

- Windows Client:........................800 MB
- Web Application:.......................200 MB


Temp Files: A further 100 MB of free space is required for temporary files during the installation.


Plus: 1.0 GB free space on the c:\ drive regardless of the drive that Prognosis is being installed on.

Operating Hard Drive Space:

After installation, the server requires at least the following amount of disk space for database operations:

For upgrades: Twice the recommended minimum disk space is required for a backup and restore of these databases during an upgrade to a later version.

UNIX/Linux

On the UNIX/Linux platform, all Prognosis processes run in 32-bit mode. This means that when installing on a 64-bit UNIX/Linux operating system with Hard Drives greater than 2TB and configured to use small bytes per inode, the Prognosis software will not be able to start.

This combination creates inode indexes that exceed the 32-bit integer range. An inode value exceeding the 31-bit maximum value (2147483647) will cause a crash at startup.
