Installation Checklist for MS Windows

Checklist for installing the Prognosis Server on an MS Windows machine. Before proceeding with the installation please go through the following checklist and ensure that all items have been addressed.

Release Notes

Before proceeding please take time to read the latest Release Notes. The Release Notes can contain important information relating to the installation process and software operation.

Installation Files

Ensure that you have the 11.7 installation files for Windows. See Installation for instructions on downloading this installer.

Has the Prognosis 11.7 license been received?

When received, it is recommended that the license file be saved to the same folder as the installation files. If the license file has not been received, please contact your IR Account Manager.

See: License File

Check the server requirements.

See: Hardware Requirements for Server Installation

Check MS Windows Version and updates

Check that you have a supported version of the Operating System, see Supported Platforms and Products for Transact and Infrastructure.

It is highly recommended that all pending MS Windows updates be applied in order to ensure that the operating system is completely up to date. To do this run the Windows Update facility before attempting the installation.

If the Operating System is going to be used with a language other than English, then the initial installation of MS Windows must be performed using the MS Windows English ISO. Once MS Windows installation has been completed, the language within the OS can be changed as required.

Pre-requisite software

The following software is required on the server. If the installer does not find this software on the destination machine it will be automatically installed.

  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 & 2017 RC Redistributable Package (x86) – needed to run 32-bit code (on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows)

  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 & 2017 RC Redistributable Package (x64) – needed to run 64-bit code (on 64-bit Windows)

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6. This is needed to run .NET code (on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows).
The .NET Framework installation may not have all the latest updates included, therefore you may find that during your next patch window a large number of updates will be generated and this should be planned for. The alternative is to install the required .NET Framework version and the associated updates prior to the installation.

Ensure that the correct level logon is available (username/password)

Administrator privileges will be required for the installer to complete all tasks.

Determine which disk drive and folder to installed on.

The server installation cannot be made into any of the following folders:

  • /Program Files
  • /Program Files (x86)
  • /Users
  • /Documents and Settings
  • /WINDOWS

This is because Prognosis needs to save/modify files in its installed location as the logged in user. In MS Windows, problems can occur when trying to do this in these folders unless the user is an administrator, which may not be the case.

Is SNMP installed?

If installed, the SNMP service will be enabled to monitor remote devices. The software will still run without the SNMP service but some data will be unavailable. SNMP can be installed from the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel applet by selecting the Add/Remove Windows Components wizard and installing the Management and Monitoring Tools component.

Disable virus checking software.

It is preferable that all types of virus checking software be disabled on the destination machine. Active virus checking software may cause system problems ranging from errors when accessing configurations to the slow transfer of data between servers. However, if this is not possible then the following folders should be added to the virus checking exclusion list and excluded from any endpoint security software.

  • C:\Prognosis

  • C:\PrognosisBackup

  • C:\PrognosisData

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\IR\Path Insight (for customers using Path Insight)

Proxy Server Settings (Web Session Recorder only)

This instruction is only applicable for users of the Web Application Management product suite, specifically the Web Session Recorder. If a Proxy server is being used on the network, it may be necessary to configure the Internet settings so that the required internet access is made available to the Web Session Recorder.

See: Proxy Server Settings for Web Session Recorder

Is the Windows Client to be included with this installation?

See the Installing the Windows Client for information specific to this component.

Is the Web Application to be included with this installation?

See the Installing the Web Application for information specific to this component.

Once the checklist has been completed, proceed with the installation. For details see, Installation Procedure for MS Windows.
